How to Hit Your Vape Pen Without Coughing

How to Hit Your Vape Pen Without Coughing

Coughing is a common side effect of vaping, and it can lead to a scratchy throat or irritated lungs. None of which makes it sounds all too appealing.

You might think it’s because the oil is harsh or the vape pen is broken, but there are plenty of reasons you might cough.

The good news is there are things you can do to mitigate this, and we’re here to help you learn how to hit a vape without coughing.

Why Do I Cough When I Vape?

Despite what you’ve heard about coughing caused by THC percentages or contaminated extracts, there are plenty of logical reasons why you cough when you vape.

Wrong Vaping Technique

First of all—it’s not a contest. No one is awarding points for ripping a vape pen so hard that tears stream down your face while you hack and gasp for air. Even if you’re not trying to rip it like Cheech, it’s still easy to miscalculate just how much you should inhale.

How you inhale can make a big difference in the likelihood that you might cough. For example, you don’t want to smoke it like a cigarette. When you smoke a cigarette, you draw the smoke into your mouth and then inhale it all back into your lungs at once before exhaling. Instead, vaping requires a slow, steady draw, to pull the vapor directly into your lungs.

Device Issues

Vape pen mechanics tend to vary. Some pens have multiple heat settings and require you to hold down a button while you draw. And if the variability in the device isn’t confusing enough, different types of oil might vape better at different temperatures

Usually, the company has put some thought into this and clarifies its user instructions. If you are coughing at higher temperature settings, try taking it down a few notches to reduce the amount of vapor you are inhaling with each hit.

Chain Vaping

Chain vaping is when you take multiple hits with a long draw in short succession. The wick can dry out by not giving the cartridge or chamber a break between hits. You are not inhaling oil in those quick draws when the wick dries out. Instead, you’re just burning off the tasty terpenes rather than vaporizing them.

Tips for Cough-Free Vape Hits

Now that you understand why you might be coughing, here’s how to hit a vape pen without coughing:

  • Practice Your Technique: Finding the right way to inhale can take a little practice, and it might vary depending on your device. The best way to hit a vape pen is by taking a slow, steady inhale directly into your lungs. Stop before you feel your chest expand, and notice how you feel. This might be a 1-3 second draw. If you still cough, try taking a tiny “puff” and see if that helps. Of course, you can always hit it again.
  • Know Your Vape: If a company uses propylene glycol in their vape pens, it will be on the ingredient label. If you want to rule out any sensitivity to PG, shop for brands that do not use cutting agents of any kind.
  • Check the Temp: Lower the temperature if your vape pen has a variable heat setting and you are coughing when you hit it. More often than not, these simple adjustments can help you stop coughing.
  • Take a Break: There’s no need to hit your vape over and over repeatedly. In fact, it can ruin the experience and possibly damage your pen. Instead, wait at least 20 seconds in between hits to avoid potential coughing.
