Maybe you want to stock up on a good vape pen deal or buy enough weed to last through the winter. All this planning ahead can leave you wondering: how much weed can you buy? In some states, it’s based only on weight, and in others, the THC percentage matters. Here are a few of the top states and their laws, plus all the details on why the totals vary and who’s tracking them.
Cannabis Compliance Varies by State
Cannabis remains federally illegal, so regulations are governed by the state. When a new state legalizes cannabis, a governing authority is in charge of this program. In California, it’s the Bureau of Cannabis Control, and in New Mexico, it’s the Cannabis Control Division. Every state has a different authority, and its job is to determine how much weed you can buy in a day and in what form.
How Do Dispensaries Track Quantity?
Once a state’s cannabis authority is established, they have to decide on a state tracking system. METRC, Track and Trace, and BioTrack are some of the cannabis tracking systems (CTS) available. These systems track cannabis from “seed to sale” with incredible detail. For example, if a cannabis plant moves from its incubator room into a vegetation room, a staff member would need to document this change with a very specific transaction.
The same thing happens at a retail level but with even more complexity. Retailers must abide by this system of moving and tracking inventory, but the state-approved programs are not retail-friendly. So, they do not track sales and count dollars and offer the perks that a traditional point-of-sale system (POS) offers. Instead, retailers opt for one of the dozens of solutions like FlowHub, GreenBits, LeafLogix, and many more.
Each of these integrates with the state’s CTS, and monitors and reports on every transaction. Within these platforms, purchases are documented based on a medical marijuana card number or a state ID for recreational users.
